The next LeaderShape® Institute™ session will be held from Monday, January 12, 2026 thru Thursday, January 15, 2026.

The LeaderShape® Institute™ is a nationally recognized leadership development retreat. The Illinois Leadership® Center coordinates a special session each year for Illinois undergraduate students, held at the Allerton Park and Retreat Center in Monticello, IL.

Undergraduate Students who attend LeaderShape® Institute™ will:

  • Identify the values they hold that lead to making a difference in the communities around them.
  • Develop a vision for something they care about.
  • Explore who they are and the impact that they want to have on communities working towards a more caring, just, and equitable society. 

•    Applications for the 2026 LeaderShape® Institute™ will be open from October 1, 2025 – November 9, 2025.

As an Undergraduate Student

Students apply to participate in The Institute™, and about 60 Illinois undergraduate students are selected to attend each year.  Click here to apply - applications are open from October 1 through November 10.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the program held?

It is held at the Allerton Park Retreat Center in Monticello, Illinois. Round-trip transportation, housing, and three daily meals will be provided for all participants. Learn more about Allerton Park here at allerton.illinois.edu

What does a typical day look like?

Most days will go from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Participants will engage in team building activities, group discussions and exercises, and individual reflections each day of the program. Daily meals, snacks and other refreshments are also provided to participants throughout each day.

How much does the program cost?

Participants will be selected and sponsored financially by their respective colleges, departments, or units, so the retreat is free of cost for students who attend.

Can I arrive later or leave early?

No, participants must be able to attend the entirety of the program. Applicants must agree to this expectation when completing the application to be considered eligible to attend.

Can graduate students attend?

No, this program is only open to Illinois undergraduate students.
